Need some advice - is it safe to load Win XP SP2?

I am running WinXP SP1 plus all the updates prior to SP2 right now. I heard so many bad things about SP2 that I have not loaded it yet. It is sitting in my trey, and reminds me every day that it wants to be installed, but I have resisted. I wanted to ask you folks - has anyone loaded it? What problems have you had, specifically with Notes/Domino, Eclipse, iTunes, Trillian, Norton AV, etc.? Or, should I continue to wait?

Your opinions appreciated.

1 - Same here... no problems. 6.5.1, logged into W2k domain, everything works fine. I think it's worth the move, the built-in browser pop-up blocker makes it worth it right there for me. But I agree, don't start it until you don't need your PC for a few hours.

2 - Hi,

I'm running SP2 and I haven't had any problems with Lotus Notes.

Watch out for Norton AV : First uninstall Norton AV, then install SP2, and then reinstall Norton AV.

3 - Thanks guys - I really appreciate the help. I'll upgrade later this weekend.

Andrew - I would LOVE to see a blog entry that lists the things you recommend to do post SP2 upgrade - the things you listed, including services, and what they are (and why we don't need them), etc. You could even expand it into XP in general.

That would be VERY helpful.

Thanks again, everyone!

4 - As a reference to determining which Windows Services to keep running, I found this site to brimming with useful information: (and I think you'd appreciate the site name... )

I have a photo of Rock singing Karaoke from last year, if anyone wants to blackmail, I mean, add an interesting slide to one of their presentations...

5 - I have had SP2 installed for a couple of months now and been using Notes (6.5.x), Domino (6.0.x), Eclipse (3.0) and WSAD(5.1) with absolutely no problems. Not sure if this is the norm but as far as I can tell it's a move well worth making when you have a spare hour or two.

6 - not totally sure from the above, so just to double-check:
winxp, sp2, and with (technically not-supported) Domino server 6.5x? (rather than 6.0x.)

7 - OK, I updated. All seems well so far. I would love to know of any services I can kill off to increase performance - any suggestions welcome.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

8 - btw i've also run eclipse as well in the above scenario, on the laptop (with most everything else running) and had no problems. i've been stuck in designer / lotusscript land for a while and haven't seen much eclipse, but i have run it here and there.

sametime (not trillian), sometimes connecting to aol, is usually on, about 90% of the time.

9 - Hi,

works fine here but do not forget backups. I would suggets to ghost your HDD. There are some rare occasions when the system cannot start after applying SP2 (BSOD, you know...). Usually related to strange drivers etc..

10 - xp sp2 with 6.5.2 and 6.5.3 both on laptop and desktop machines (both HP) caused no problems. running a server on the laptop, no issues there either. i am often running a server, developing in designer, checking mail in the client, debugging, and running iTunes plus odd things like excel and/or word, etc, simultaneously. works great.

the equipment in question is new. a gig of ram on the laptop and the desktop has half of that, but has a very fast cpu, pentium 4 with the virtual multithreading (or whatever that is called). laptop has a cpu with the built in wireless stuff, it runs about 1.7 ghrz.

11 - Windows XP SP2 generally causes no problems for the Domino crowd either on the server or the workstation with a few caveats...

First, post installation the machine slows way down for a time while things are moved around. 80% of that speed loss comes back in an hour or so presumably as the cache and the pre-load library lists catch up with the changes.

Next, plan to shut down the monitoring tool that XP turns on that tries to tell you if your anti-virus and such are up to speed. If you have these tools already, just tell XP to stop monitoring. You may want to turn OFF xp firewalling if you have your own or are behind a firewall already.

Finally, once things are stable, go into the serevices list and sort by the startup type. Many new services are started automatically that most of us don't use. Distributed link and file system tracking being key among these. Find any services you don't use or need and set the startup type to "disabled" and then stop them. This will give you back most of the performance and greatly reduce the memory usage.
