Need some advice - is it safe to load Win XP SP2?
Category What do you think?

I am running WinXP SP1 plus all the updates prior to SP2 right now. I heard so many bad things about SP2 that I have not loaded it yet. It is sitting in my trey, and reminds me every day that it wants to be installed, but I have resisted. I wanted to ask you folks - has anyone loaded it? What problems have you had, specifically with Notes/Domino, Eclipse, iTunes, Trillian, Norton AV, etc.? Or, should I continue to wait?
Your opinions appreciated.

I'm running SP2 and I haven't had any problems with Lotus Notes.
Watch out for Norton AV : First uninstall Norton AV, then install SP2, and then reinstall Norton AV.

Andrew - I would LOVE to see a blog entry that lists the things you recommend to do post SP2 upgrade - the things you listed, including services, and what they are (and why we don't need them), etc. You could even expand it into XP in general.
That would be VERY helpful.
Thanks again, everyone!

winxp, sp2, and with (technically not-supported) Domino server 6.5x? (rather than 6.0x.)

works fine here but do not forget backups. I would suggets to ghost your HDD. There are some rare occasions when the system cannot start after applying SP2 (BSOD, you know...). Usually related to strange drivers etc..

the equipment in question is new. a gig of ram on the laptop and the desktop has half of that, but has a very fast cpu, pentium 4 with the virtual multithreading (or whatever that is called). laptop has a cpu with the built in wireless stuff, it runs about 1.7 ghrz.

First, post installation the machine slows way down for a time while things are moved around. 80% of that speed loss comes back in an hour or so presumably as the cache and the pre-load library lists catch up with the changes.
Next, plan to shut down the monitoring tool that XP turns on that tries to tell you if your anti-virus and such are up to speed. If you have these tools already, just tell XP to stop monitoring. You may want to turn OFF xp firewalling if you have your own or are behind a firewall already.
Finally, once things are stable, go into the serevices list and sort by the startup type. Many new services are started automatically that most of us don't use. Distributed link and file system tracking being key among these. Find any services you don't use or need and set the startup type to "disabled" and then stop them. This will give you back most of the performance and greatly reduce the memory usage.
