I am out of the country until Wednesday evening (20 April 2005), speaking at the Admin & Developer 2005 conference in Munich-Dornach, Germany. This is a great conference put on by HTVerlag, the publishers of the German Groupware magazine. Kelsey and I arrived this morning about 8AM local time. We hired a car to take us to our hotel (friendly driver, BTW, who also took Andrew and his daughter Ariel to the hotel later today), the NH Munich-Dornach hotel. This is a very nice hotel, and we have a comfortable room.

Kelsey and I went exploring to find some food. The area we are in is all office complexes, and is dead on the weekends. We walked about a mile into the center of Dornach, and found a little biergarten (beer hall/restaurant) open. The theme of this pub was greek food with good beer. We had gyro meat, french fries, and Cokes. The patriarch of the family-run business served us, and when he brought us our Cokes he also brought me a shot of Ouzo (Greek drink, tastes like licorice). I drank it and proclaimed "Opa!", as I was taught by friends in the Air Force. He was very nice, and Kelsey and I enjoyed the food very much.

Later in the day Andrew and Ariel arrived, and we again walked into town. We stopped by a store for me to get some Cokes for the room, and Kesley was happy to find  her favorite drink - Mezzo Mix. Basically it is Coke mixed with "orange-aid" (think lemonaide, but with orange juice). I know, you're thinking "ewww", but let me tell you, it is REALLY good.

We returned to the hotel for dinner, and Ariel and Kelsey got to experience German cuisine. We all had a good dinner, then went back to Andrew's room and watched "Return of the Jedi" on his computer. We're going to go out with our friend Benfried Geiger tomorrow to see the surrounding area.

More later!

1 - You go all the way to Germany to watch Return Of The Jedi on a laptop. You are a geek.

2 - If you're in a restaurant or pub and can't find Mezzo Mix on the menu, search for "Spezi". It's the same, Mezzo Mix is only the product name.

Usually, it's a mixture of Coke and "Fanta", a beverage well known in Germany. I was very surprised of the fact it (AFAIK) doesn't exist in the US, since it's also from the Coca Cola Company.

3 - ... and Cream Soda.

You'll find a Gasthaus somewhere near just about every fighter squadron and armour base in Canada. Folks who were posted to either Lahr or Baden for any length of time just couldn't come all the way home, it seems. And mayo on fries is de rigeur here in Montreal (when you're not having poutine, of course).

4 - Ah... That brings back great memories! I still mix coke & orange sometimes, but it's never the same. Fanta used to be sold here in the U. S. back in the 60's and possibly early 70's. I believe they had orange, strawberry, grape and ???

I lived in Spangdahlem Germany, near Trier, for three years while I was in the Air Force -- probably the best time of my life, not to mention the best food! I've been trying to find a decent German restaurant here in the states ever since! None of them compare! I did, however, find an almost authentic Gasthaus in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

All I want to know is how do they make their french fries (pomme frittes) so darn melt-in-your-mouth good? And why can't you find REAL Cordon Blue here???

Oh... people here think I'm CRAZY for using mayonnaise on my fries...

Thanks for the memories!

Gary
