ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?

I am a huge NFL fan, and an even bigger Atlanta Falcons fan. I have been a season ticket holder since 1989, and I have been a fan even longer (that was when I finally had the means to pay for season tickets, and lived in close proximity to Atlanta). I have seen some really bad years with the Falcons - really bad. But, I have stuck with my team through the good times and (mostly) bad. I am a homer. I love my team.

I bring this up today because today is the beginning of my favorite time of year - my annual love/hate relationship with my Falcons is renewed. Why today? Because this is the first home game of the season, a preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. Sure, it is a meaningless game - but a meaningless game that I get to attend in person is better than no game at all. And I am truly looking forward to this year. My Falcons gained a new owner a few years back, a man by the name of Arthur Blank (cofounder of Home Depot). Mr. Blank has made my team respectable, and a hot commodity. Before Blank I couldn't give tickets away; now there is a waiting list for season tickets 20,000 long. My Falcons have the most exciting Quarterback in the NFL, Michael Vick at the helm, and we're coming off of a season where we were one game short of going to the Super Bowl. This year is going to be a landmark year - since the inception of my Falcons in 1966 they have never had back-to-back winning seasons. Ever. I feel that this is the year that we not only break that curse, but also go very far in the playoffs. Hey, if Boston can do it in baseball, we can do it in the NFL.

So, I am about to get ready for the game and the prerequisite tailgate party.

I can't wait!

1 - I grew up in Savannah, since we have no NFL team there I have long to been a Falcons fan. It's the hardest relationship I have even been in. You get beat, lied to, let down, go to the Super Bowl, watch the entire team leave and then the logo changed and so did the entire face of the team.

I used to do a weekend show @ WGST and hated the Falcons for a few years for taking my show time during football season, but It did give me time to watch or listen to the games.

They look good this year, and Vick looks good along with the new additions too. I still think they should make Vick a running back or a WR, but I say that in jest as I have no other decent advise for Coach, as he does not care what I think. I am just a fan.

GO Falcons!

2 - 2 and 0 - Go Falcons!

3 - Well congrats on the pre-season win yesterday. It will be exciting to follow the Falcons this year and see if Vick can take them all the way (though it will be tough)...

Here in Denmark we have a channel showing 2 live NFL games every Sunday and sometimes the Monday night game as well. It's cool, though it isn't work-friendly due to the time difference...

4 - There is no such thing as a meaningless football game.

Until they moved, I was a Houston Oilers fan going back to the early seventies when my dad had season tickets. There were many years that they were pretty bad, but one particular year they stunk so bad that my dad didn't even want to go to the game. He didn't want to throw the tickets away (the were relatively expensive even back then) so he got an idea.

He was visiting an office building in downtown Houston and decided he would leave the four tickets on the dash of his car with the window rolled down hoping someone would just take the tickets. Lo and behold, when he came back out a couple of hours later, when he looked on the dash to see if anyone had taken the tickets, there were four more tickets there on the dash along with his four.

Late, I'm out!

5 - Dude,

I tried to get hold of you Saturday- we had burgers and what-not. One of the guys grilled duck and a thai pork dish, but that was the most involved thing. Not a huge cook out yet- just getting warmed up. The rain sucked too, although my brother's family always manages to get under that bridge in lot A.

I wore that yellow shirt in case you saw me- heheheh - makes a big target.

The Falcons looked pretty lackluster compared to Japan, I thought. Roddy White was definitely burning by the coverage, though. I'm excited. I'm really glad I hung on to the tickets. I was soooo close to giving them up this year. We'll have to coordinate a little better next time so we can hang some!
