Well Libby, Rich, and Ben have done it - and I want to be a kewl kid too.

From Libby's post, here are the instructions:
The instructions are: Go to musicoutfitters.com, and do a search on the most popular 100 songs from the year you graduated high school. (You can do this by searching on the year you graduated). Bold the ones you actually like. (Understand that the word "like" in this case means, at the very least, "wouldn't immediately change the radio station from.") Pick a favorite. Underline that favorite. And Strikethru the ones you loathe. Italicize the ones you consider to be guilty pleasures.

Since I graduated in 1982, the top 100 songs from that year tend to be a combination of sappy crap, new wave, and hair bands. Here's the list...

Some comments about the list...
  • I actually do like some Elton John, but most of it is his 70s stuff when he was with Bernie Taupin. The 80s stuff was pop crap.
  • I was not a big fan of new wave, with the exception of The Police and The Cars
  • I despise Air Supply with every fiber of my being, and it was painful even to read the titles of their songs
  • I love the song Tainted Love by SoftCell. So sue me.
  • I like Foreigner. So sue me again.
  • I also love the song Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nick, and even listened to it today before I saw this list. It probably helps that I had a crush on Stevie back in my high school days - she was hot back then. Remember, I was in high school when Rumours broke - and that was a defining album back then.

Since this has been so popular, I imagine others will want to list theirs too. If you have your own blog, do it there; if not, feel free to do it here or on one of the others before me.

I have to admit it was fun to stroll down memory lane; I also have to admit that I had to listen to some of these songs on iTunes to be able to remember them. Oh well, Memory Lane isn't as clear as it used to be...

Comments

1 - Umm, I listen to all those songs on the "oldies" station... j/k! Some good stuff - my dad has a good bit of that on vinyl!

2 - I am having a hard time trying to picture Ben with green spiked hair, slamming to new wave...

3 - Am I really that old? *sigh* Waiting on a Friend is one of my all time favorite Stones song. The Police I saw in concert, supporting their Ghost in the Machine tour. Wish I still had that t-shirt. Flock of Seagulls, whatever possessed me to buy that album? And their hair! Oh, my. For those of you that want to know what it was like, check out the Adam Sandler movie, The Wedding Singer. Now that I think about it, that movie was set in the early 80's.

4 - I like Tainted Love and I Love Rock N' Roll and Crimson and Clover a lot. Of course, I was a big fan of New Wave too, but most of the best isn't on the Top 100 list.

5 - Next time I get on my high horse about "the music these kids listen to nowadays", I'll have to humble myself by reading this list. Pretty sad.

I was into synthesizer bands then: Ultravox, Gary Numan, OMD, etc. Few people in the US had heard of them back then, and nobody remembers them anymore, but I still listen to them once in a while.

RJL, also class of 1982

6 - I would definitely bold 33 (Let's Groove, EWF), 13 (Harden My Heart, Quarterflash- love the sax), 67 (I Ran, Flock of Seagulls).

There are a few I'd probably make guilty pleasures too, but overall that year wasn't that great- I guess my favorite from that year was Rosanna- I love that whole album. (oops- I said album didn't I? Well it was THEN)

7 - Tainted Love... oh that takes me back. I remember the first time I heard the version that segues into Where Did Our Love Go. It was late at night and I was driving from campus to Dunkin' Donuts for a much needed sugar fix. Just before I got there, the segue came just before I turned into the parking lot. Freaked me out

8 - wow- I just looked at 1985 (my year) and boy does it suck. Lots and lots of strikethroughs on there...hehehe...Dangit, I need to get my blog going again to do this!

9 - hey rocky its janyne i really like you sire its something different see ya later
janyne

10 - I love these lists.
Looks like I've got similiar tastes as you Rock and I graduated in 1982 also. I agree with your Elton John, New Wave, Foreigner and Stevie Nicks comments. I'd hate to admit it but liked some of that sappy stuff like Air Supply. Did you ever see the movie "Tommy Boy" with Chris Farley and David Spade? There's a seen when they're channel surfing on the radion as they drive down the road. They tune into a Carpenter's song and act like it sucks and then in the next scene their crying and singing along.
I think that's hilarious because I too loved Karen Carpenter's voice.
Personally, I've always been more into album rock and some deeper cuts than they ever play on radio. I was a huge Bruce Springsteen fan and "Nebraska" was released in 1982.
I'm loving my Sirius radion with channels like Jam On, Radio Margaritaville and The Vault.
I'll post my list this weekend.

11 - love/b

12 - I think in 1982 my favorite song was the theme for Sesame Street! =)
