I am a normal guy - a guy who believes that most duct tape is like the force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together. I love duct tape, have used it for a myriad of uses, and typcially have at least one roll around my house at any given time.

We have an old beater van that has a window blown out. I have been taping plastic over the window until I find a replacement at a junk yard. I had been using duct tape, but it would only last a few days - less if it was really cold outside or if it rained. So, I went on a quest - a quest to possibly find a successor to my beloved duct tape. I mean, we're always looking for ways to make things better/faster/kewler, and I couldn't imagine that duct tape technology was any different.

Well, I was right.

I found this amazing stuff called Gorilla Tape. This stuff is amazing. It sticks to almost anything, and it holds for a really long time. But it still has all the useability of duct tape - it can be easily torn, and can be used in all the same ways - even as electrical tape.

Don't believe me? How about Popular Science magazine? They have voted Gorilla Tape as Best of What’s New in 2006. According to this press release at PR Leap:

To form a lasting bond, tape needs to have the characteristics of sticking strength, flexibility, and the ability to conform. Those qualities define the science behind Gorilla Tape’s ability to stick to smooth and rough surfaces alike, long-term, indoors or out. Here’s how:
  • Double-thick adhesive: The thicker the adhesive, the better the tape. With 17 mils of adhesive – two times more than the amount commonly found in other all-purpose tape —Gorilla Tape fills gaps for a stickier grip, especially in applications involving rough, porous or imperfect surfaces.
  • Strong reinforced backing: Gorilla Tape’s reinforced backing has a higher thread count than the current industry standard, which allows for enhanced flexibility and durability, yet it can be ripped by hand. The unique webbed backing provides strong support for the extra thick adhesive, and its woven texture improves conformability to most any surface feature.
  • Tough, all-weather shell: The abrasion resistant, all-weather shell provides a tight barrier against moisture to hold the bond tight under the most extreme weather conditions and harsh UV rays.

I started using Gorilla Tape, and it holds for weeks - in all types of weather. I have used it for other things, and it continues to impress me.

So, I highly recommend you give Gorilla Tape a try - it is truly amazing stuff.

2 - Somebody once told me that a good repairman needs only two tools: duct tape (Gorilla Tape now obviously) and WD-40.

If it moves and it shouldn't: duct tape it in place. If it doesn't move and it should: WD40 till it does.

3 - That would have come in handy when I used to have my Honda with the duct tape sunroof

For a new window for your van try { Link } . You can search the whole country.

4 - you're right...that stuff is pretty great

but not as cheap!

Check out some of this awesome duct tape stuff I found:
