I recently installed Notes 8 on my "real" machine as my primary Notes client (before today I have been running Hannover builds in a VMware machine for development, and I have been using 7.0.2 as my "primary" Notes client). I also happen to use Trillian Pro with the Sametime plugin from IBM Alphaworks to connect to our internal Sametime networks. Well, after installing Notes 8 I began getting the following error when starting Trillian:

'Failed to initialize Sametime session object'
error 0x80040154

After some digging I discovered that the Sametime plugin somehow wasn't registered anymore in the Windows registry. No idea why, I am guessing the Notes 8 install "un" registered it because of the Sametime support in the Notes 8 client.

In any case the fix for this is simple:
  1. Open a command (i.e. DOS) window
  2. Navigate to the Sametime plugin directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Trillian\plugins\Sametime)
  3. Register the Sametime plugin by entering the following line: SametimePlugin -regserver

If successful there will be no response in the command window - it will simply return to the prompt.

After re-registering the Sametime plugin it should work fine.

Since I know many people are installing Notes 8 Beta 2 lately I figured there would be a few people who may run into this problem, so I wanted to share. Hope this helps!

NOTE: I am not sure that this is caused by the Notes 8 install - it may be coincidence. I also set up Trillian to allow multiple logins (for my daughter and me), and that may have caused a problem too. But just in case it wasn't a coincidence, I wanted to post my resolution.

1 - I don't think it was the Notes 8 beta. - I just had exactly the same issue with a new/clean install of trillian pro on a newly loaded WinXP Thinkpad with Notes 7.0.2. Thanks for your post...!

2 - I pulled the plugin when I moved to 8 beta and some other Sametime beta stuff. I found difficulties when moving the versions.

3 - Perfect!! your solution did work for me..
I tried to "Copy" the entire Trillian installation from one thinkpad to a newer one, everything worked fine other then the SameTime plugin..
I just used your registration trick, it worked real perfect..
Thanks for your effort, it helped me more then just you..

4 - Thanks. worked like a charm. Had to move it between PCs and couldn't find a copy on the net

5 - I was wondering if any of you have access to the now defunct Lotus Sametime plugin for Trillian. Now that my system is back together I find the plugin no longer available. I am using an older and different version from Sourceforge.net but I would like to go back to the IBM developed version.

Any thoughts?
