Found this in my blog catching up over at Mike Schubert's site:
| What American accent do you have? (Best version so far) Southern People used to hate Southern accents but now everyone wants one. |

Well, I guess that makes sense. My accent isn't as thick as some of my Southern bretheren, and as Mike said in his post I also worked at flattening my accent because at the time I was in school (late 70s - early 80s) the Southern accent automatically lowered your IQ by 20 points in non-Southerner's eyes. I attribute this to the TV shows at the time - Dukes of Hazzard, Carter Country, etc.
Now, I'm older, and I don't concentrate on it as much. It is my "natural" accent - I am an Atlanta native (one of the few left), and I have lived in the South my whole life (even when in the USAF!). So, I guess this result makes sense. I'm comfortable with it.
Post your results here, if you wish - I'm curious to see where the rest of you fall, especially my non-American readers!

You're not Northern, Southern, or Western, you're just plain -American-.
Nope, I'm Swiss.
And English is my third language. I do get remarks about my American accent from British folks though. That's probably because I learned to speak English during my stay in Florida.

However, the part where it says "This could either mean an r-less NYC or Providence accent" is spot-on, seeing Australian English is unambiguously of the non-rhotic variety.
A test of this kind is like handing someone a couple of objects and asking whether they're of the same or different weights, without finding out how much they actually weigh.

I think because I lived in Portsmouth, VA most of my life, and that area is very transient, that my accent has been affected.

Although I've lived in Massachusetts longer than anywhere else (30 years), I grew up near New York City, and I'm basically an R-less New Yorker. Somehow I never did pick up that Lawn-Geyeland thing...
