Found this in my blog catching up over at Mike Schubert's site:

What American accent do you have? (Best version so far)

Southern

People used to hate Southern accents but now everyone wants one.

Well, I guess that makes sense. My accent isn't as thick as some of my Southern bretheren, and as Mike said in his post I also worked at flattening my accent because at the time I was in school (late 70s - early 80s) the Southern accent automatically lowered your IQ by 20 points in non-Southerner's eyes. I attribute this to the TV shows at the time - Dukes of Hazzard, Carter Country, etc.

Now, I'm older, and I don't concentrate on it as much. It is my "natural" accent - I am an Atlanta native (one of the few left), and I have lived in the South my whole life (even when in the USAF!). So, I guess this result makes sense. I'm comfortable with it.

Post your results here, if you wish - I'm curious to see where the rest of you fall, especially my non-American readers!

1 - Muahhahaaa! My result:

Neutral

You're not Northern, Southern, or Western, you're just plain -American-.

Nope, I'm Swiss. Emoticon

And English is my third language. I do get remarks about my American accent from British folks though. That's probably because I learned to speak English during my stay in Florida. Emoticon

2 - Mine says "Southern" .

3 - I am Italian and I scored "Midlands". Fun is that this is a part of US I have never been to Emoticon

4 - People in northern virginia used to be southern and have southern accents like the rest of Virginia. Now its very transient, so I see why they left it out on the map . However, there are a few native Virginians left in the region. But I notice even people further south are losing their native accents too.

5 - Northeastern -- and my accent is pure middle-of-the-road Australian (and accents in Oz are socioeconomic, not regionally distinctive). Emoticon

However, the part where it says "This could either mean an r-less NYC or Providence accent" is spot-on, seeing Australian English is unambiguously of the non-rhotic variety.

A test of this kind is like handing someone a couple of objects and asking whether they're of the same or different weights, without finding out how much they actually weigh.

6 - Says I'm a midlander.. But I was born and have always lived in Virginia.

I think because I lived in Portsmouth, VA most of my life, and that area is very transient, that my accent has been affected.

7 - "Northeast New England" Hurm, I don't think this quiz works for Scots. Emoticon

8 - Northeastern for me: "This could either mean an r-less NYC or Providence accent or one from Jersey which doesn't sound the same. (People in Jersey don't call their state "Joisey" in real life)"

I am from The Netherlands Emoticon

9 - I get "midlands" every time I take one of these, even though I've spent the last 38 years in Massachusetts (and I'm 41, so that's pretty much my whole life). Which might be why sometimes people tell me I don't have an accent at all. I definitely don't have the "Bahstahn" Boston accent.

10 - I'm from Belgium, so English is only my 'third' language.
I scored Midlands.
When I talk to 'Englishmen' they think I've an American accent too.
Never understood this was positive or not Emoticon

11 - Northern, Western New England. I guess that makes sense as I was born and lived in Syracuse, NY for 24 years and then in Chicago for 24 more.

12 - Wha? My evaluation pegged me as Northern Midwest, maybe Canadian!

Nope. Hard core NW here. Emoticon

13 - Pacific NW accent, just as I thought. I always get that. And I've lived here my whole life

14 - Bang on for me.

Although I've lived in Massachusetts longer than anywhere else (30 years), I grew up near New York City, and I'm basically an R-less New Yorker. Somehow I never did pick up that Lawn-Geyeland thing...
(NOT complaining)

15 - I scored a Neutral. So an accent like that found in northwestern PA, also Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, etc. Makes some sense I guess since I grew up north of the border in southwestern Ontario, Canada.

16 - Great quiz! Apparently I have a Northeastern accent, which I suppose is to be expected for someone who comes from southern England.
