When fandom goes too far...

I don't know if you saw this in the news or not, but there was a Britney Spears fan who recently posted a heartfelt (and tear-filled) rant on YouTube pleading with the media and the public to LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!. It was even picked up by ABC News, as shown here:

Distraught Britney Fan
ABC News video of distraught Britney fan

The fan, Chris Crocker, is really upset about the way Britney is being treated by the media and the public, especially since the MTV Video Music Awards show and her supposed "comeback" (here is a video of it, in case you missed it) - where she bombed. Now, most of us agree that she brought all of this on herself; furthermore I think that most of us really could care less about whether she makes it back at all or not. However it appears that some people out there, such as this Chris Crocker person, takes this stuff seriously - way too seriously, in my opinion.

If you haven't given this video a look-see, take a moment to do so now. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Wow. Just.... wow.

Chris Crocker seems to be a self-styled video blogger, and I think is attempting to follow in the footsteps of notable gossip bloggers such as Perez Hilton. Perez Hilton is a Hollywood blogger who seems to get all the juicy gossip about the Hollywood stars, and he has made quite a good living blogging about it. However, Chris isn't nearly as good as Perez - you can check out Chris' work here, and judge for yourself. Oh, and if you haven't noticed - Chris is a guy. Fox News seems to have made a big deal out of that, which I do think is a bit of a cheap shot. They went off on Chris having an "adam's apple", being a guy, and then made some snide gay remarks. Sure, I am taking the mickey out of Chris for being a bit overboard as a Britney fan in the extreme, but I could care less if Chris is a girl or a guy - and I think it is a bit low for a news organization to do so about a person's sexuality.

So, I don't know if you noticed or not, but Chris actually mentions Perez Hilton in his video rant. Since Chris has posted this video, and since Chris mentions Perez, Perez decided to post a response to Chris' video. I present to you Perez's response...

OK, now that's funny. Vindictive? Yes. But you know, if you're going to post videos of yourself ranting at everyone about Britney Spears and how you're trying to protect her, then you are opening yourself for ridicule. And Perez's response made me laugh.

So, I don't know why I decided to post all of this - it just all struck me as bizare and funny and weird, and I wanted to share. People who are so over-the-edge with their obsessions of celebrities are just strange, yet fascinating to me - I don't get it but I am morbidly curious about it.

So, enjoy this train wreck I have presented to you. Your comments, as always, are welcome.

Update - Well, the world is going to hell (and I'm an atheist). According to a link provided by LotusGeek reader Chris Byrne, Chris Crocker is going to actually get his own reality TV show.

Give me a break.

From this story at Digital Media Wire, it appears he will get his own show.
Chris Crocker went nuts on YouTube following the Britney Spears debacle at the Video Music Awards, and 8 million people watched. Now reality television producer 44 Blue Productions has contracted with Crocker on a development deal, only the latest example of the power of YouTube to create instant celebrity. The show will be a docusoap in the vein of MTV’s The Hills and Laguna Beach, and will follow the 19-year-old Crocker's life in Tennesse, where he lives with his grandparents.

“Chris first got on our radar a year ago,” said 44 Blue co-founder Rasha Drachkovitch.

Crocker had been a web hit before the tear-filled Britney rant, having produced many popular videos on MySpace.

"It's going to pretty much be the 'Chris Crocker experience,'" Drachkovitch said. "We consider him a rebel character that people will find interesting. He's going to be a TV star."

And what's worse is that the sheep in America will watch...

2 - Yes, yes we will - because that's what bloggers do, isn't it? Comment on what they see, what they observe? I could continue your cute little snide thread, and say, "and equally as sad is readers will respond to bloggers blogging about it", etc. Did you actually have a point, or just a pointless snide remark?

So, sure - I blogged about it; but I can promise you I won't watch it...

3 - OK I had not seen the Brittany video until now, but I had read about how she is "fat".

Are these journalists nuts? Seriously, her personality is a big turn off, but if I had a wife that had two kids and looked like that, damn. Shit if I had a girlfriend that had not had two kids and looked like that.

It does worry me what expectations girls must have about their bodies, if they are told that is fat.

4 - Hehe....My favorite parody is Seth Green's :

5 - OK So first of all thank you for blogging about this I wouldn't have heard about it otherwise Emoticon

I just watched the videos and I laughed. I hated myself for laughing afterwards of course. I'm worried about Chris dude, he's too highly strung. He empathises too much. He's either very scary or extremely cynical (getting ahead on the back of Spears).

The media has lost it's way because society has lost it's way. He needs help not a TV show. His potential viewers need to get a life of their own, not his or Britney's. Turn the TV off and go and do something less boring instead. Read a book, play with the kids, anything!

6 - Oh heck, it gets even better. he is going to get his own reality show:

And equally as sad is bloggers will blog about it.

8 - Finally, now I understand this post from my favorite cat-lover site...

9 - I do her. Enough said Emoticon

10 - @Chris (5) - thanks for the link to the story. I have updated the main story with a comment and a link to that story, with proper attribution to you of course.

This gets crazier and crazier...

11 - Carl, I TOTALLY agree. How in the WORLD can she be classified as fat, by anyone's definition?

Oh, and here's something even more bizarre - she had a spray-on tan applied to her stomach area to add "shadowing" to make her stomach look more trim than it really is. Like makeup shading.

I swear, this crap is so crazy you can't make this stuff up.

Rock

12 - Oh yeah, one more thing, After all the lousy press they got this week, who's up for doing a "Leave Microsoft Alone" video?

:)

13 - He looks like the chick that was lead singer of that band Hanson who had that hit Mmmbop Emoticon
