Sigh... Going under the knife - again

About six weeks ago I dislocated my first knuckle (the one closest to the palm) of my middle finger on my left hand - and I am left handed. I did it while trying to "power thump" something while playing with my kids (a long story, and I am not going to go into it here). A byproduct of this is that I screwed up some ligaments that hold my tendon on the top of that knucke for that finger - my tendon slides off of the top of the knuckle, off towards the pinky side of my hand - and it hurts like hell. I went to the emergency room, they splinted it, and told me there was a 50/50 chance that it would heal and not require surgery.

Fast forward to yesterday. I was playing around with my dogs, and damned if I didn't hurt my finger again, and my tendon slides off the knuckle again. I went to my regular orthopedist, and he said that those ligaments aren't healing - and I am going to need surgery to fix my finger.

Crap.

So, I am scheduled to go under the knife, again, next Wednesday. It is outpatient surgery - the surgery itself should take about 30 minutes or so - and I'll be in a cast for 3-4 weeks. That sucks. The good news is that this should fix the tendon issue once and for all, which makes me happy.

Oh, I also found out one other thing while at the doctor, and this has me a little depressed. As you may or may not recall, I had surgery early last year to remove a bunch of extra bone from my left hip (called "heterotopic ossification"). The surgery wasn't as successful as I had hoped - that had to leave a bunch of bone in there to preserve the integrity of the hip socket. I was shot with radiation to (hopefully) prevent the regrowth of the bony scarring. Over the last few months, the pain has been coming back. I have kept most of my regained mobility, but my hip has been progressively hurting more and more.

Well, yesterday I had an x-ray done of my hip, and my fears were confirmed. My hip has begun to regrow the bony scarring crud. It's coming back, despite being shot with radiation.

Crap. Again.

This puts me in a pretty bad mood, to be honest. I am trying to deal with it as best as I can, but living with chronic pain is not easy. I am working with a pain management specialist now, but I must say it is tough. I don't know why I am sharing this, except to just let you know that if I am ever short with you, or if I ever seem "down" or "not myself", it is probably because I am having a bad pain day. Sorry.

OK, enough depressing posts. I'll try to come back with a cheery post soon. Thanks for letting me vent.

1 - Hey man,
Feel better soon.
In the meantime, here are some awesome Terry Pratchett quotes that might cheer you a little.

2 - Hi Rock. That is bad news. I know what you're feeling with your hip issue as I was stuck with severe sleep apnea issues for more than five years. I tried a bunch of things that didn't work (and proved really painful sometimes) and that got me depressed.

I think managing your sickness is a really good approach, but it won't be easy. Accepting the fact that you are "diminished" is kind of hard to do. I got over it, but once in a while, I can't help thinking of what I could do without that stupid health issue.

Hang in there, and keep sharing: it removes weight from your shoulders!

3 - So sorry, Rock! Sending a hug or three and hopes they find ways to help with the pain and other issues.

4 - Hate that you're going through so much pain. Hope that you can find some relief. On the brighter side, if someone irritates you, you can always show them your injured middle finger! Emoticon

5 - Damn. That sucks, Rock. I wish I had something useful to offer, but all I can do is hope things get better.

6 - we're with you rock. hang in there man. if i was in atlanta i'd drive to your house with a lot of beer. or something like that. Emoticon

7 - Sorry to hear.
I hope you've at least picked up a copy of the Black Crowes new cd, Warpaint. I got it on Friday and it's really good. I think you'll like it. $10 at CircuitCity. Emoticon That's a start in cheering up.

8 - The bright side is you can flip people off up and down 985 with impunity for 3-4 weeks. And that corridor is a TARGET RICH environment!

9 - So sorry to hear that. I hope the surgery will go well and I'm sending you good vibes across the Atlantic! You can be sure many people are thinking of you.

10 - Sorry to hear about the repeat of the surgery. I hope you are back up and running, and typing, soon. Emoticon

11 - Autch, Rocky that must hurt Emoticon . You never think about your limbs function until they really hurt and disable you. I hope it is done when the cast comes off Emoticon

12 - I can't even imagine what living with the constant pain from your hip is like and the fact that most of us aren't aware of it most of the time is entirely down to your strength of character in refusing to let it bring you down or limit you.

Sending a large heaping of good vibes to boost your good karma and turn that luck around.

13 - Sorry you're having to go through this Rocky. Unfortunately I don't have to imagine that hard what the pain is like or for that matter what having one hand out of commission for several weeks is like. On the latter point, I can offer one constructive suggestion: Get Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech to text software so you can dictate into the computer. I used it when I messed up my arm last year and it is amazingly fast and accurate. It's pretty easy to train too when it comes to those non-dictionary terms (e.g. "LotusGeek"). For things like IM/email which are less demanding of accuracy, it's even more useful. It can also respond to verbal commands that might otherwise require mouse movements, which I didn't need as much because my "mouse hand" was not injured. You may find that more useful.

Good luck, and feel free to ping me if you have any questions about the software. And no, I don't own any stock in the company Emoticon.

14 - Sorry to hear about this. Take care Rock...Hope you heal fast!
