This came up in my "Quote of the Day" block on my iGoogle home page, and it just struck me as an oldie-but-a-goodie - and very appropros...
If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

1 - interesting

2 - RR would be out of business. You would have one company making good cars, and millions of others cranking out junk that falls apart once or twice a day.

3 - And Rolls-Royce would automatically update the design of your oil filter while your car was moving forcing you to change your brand of oil in order to keep the car working, and when you updated to a new model of Rolls-Royce, you would have to switch from your old favourite radio stations that you liked because the old stations were not supported on the new radio, and even though you had purchased the Rolls-Royce for cash with a nice 12 months warranty, in six months Rolls-Royce would send you another invoice for your Rolls-Royce so that your warranty would still be recognized, and some character called "Jeeves" would attempt to turn your blinkers on automatically every time you turned the steering wheel, and the steering wheel would be replaced with a joy stick because some Rolls-Royce engineeer felt strongly that joy sticks were more efficient than your old steering wheel anyway......
