I'm in Beverly, MA this week, visiting Teamstudio headquarters. The office complex where Teamstudio resides is very nice, and there are many business that "live" here. As you walk through the halls, there are various ads placed throughout the complex. One such ad is near the elevators on our floor - this ad is pictured below:

Blue Monkey Ad

It's a nice ad, but the geek in me has a problem with it. I took this picture to show it to my sons, because I know they are into this type of thing; however I thought it would be an interesting question to pose to my readers as well.

Now, to most people, there's probably nothing wrong with this ad. It is appealing, colorful, fun, etc. However there's something that really bugs me about this ad - a glaring error in my eyes. Now I know this is probably only a problem to other geeks like myself, and normal "humans" could care less about the problem I see.

So my question is this: What is the problem with the ad pictured above?

I am sure someone will post it almost immediately; if not, I'll post the answer tomorrow.

Whether you participate or not, have a great weekend!

That's no monkey...that's a chimp, man!

4 - Looks way too much like Rocky Oliver :)

5 - @4 - LOL, well, that could be true - it hits too close to home Emoticon

@3 - WE HAVE A WINNA!! Chris is right. The animal pictured is a chimpanzee, which is a type of "great ape"

A monkey is most known by having a tail; great apes do not. If you're a geek, and want to more about the differences between monkeys and apes, check out this link: { Link }

Either call the company "Blue Ape", or change the pic!! Otherwise it drives me crazy!! Emoticon

6 - Wouldn't do to upset the Librarian!

7 - whatever you do, don't tell Spug. { Link }

you'll break monkey boy's heart. Emoticon

8 - It is a chimpanzee, not a monkey, ooooppppppsssss, you already gave it away.
In any case, yes, you are a geek, have fun this weekend.

9 - @6 (Lars) - OK, I have tried to figure this out, but I have to admit - I have no idea what "Wouldn't do to upset the Librarian!" means. Can you please explain it?

Thanks!

Rock

10 - @9 - Early in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, the librarian of Unseen University is turned into an ape by a magical accident. Calling him a monkey is bad for one's health.

11 - @10 (Scott) - thanks SO much for explaining that! I have read many, many Sci Fi series, but I must admit that's one I didn't know about.

Is that a good series? Should I give it a read?

Rock

12 - Rocky,
I think it's a great series but, at 36 books, if you start with the first and like it you're in for the long haul.

The series isn't strictly sci-fi. The most accurate genre label I've seen for it is "comic fantasy". Every book has plenty of humour and general weirdness mixed with some serious stuff.

13 - Seriously Rocky, you must check out a Discworld novel e.g. next time you're travelling.

My particular favourites are Reaper Man and The Truth, but any involving the Watch (eg Guards, Guards) or Rincewind the Wizard will do. Not too keen on the Witch ones, but for other people, they're the best. They're all worth a read at least once as they're so amusing and entertaining.

14 - ...not only is the monkey a chimpanzee, but the ICON is also a chimpanzee!

Either the creator is dumb as a box-o-rocks, or their quality control is non-existent.

Or wait, let's think OOTB...maybe the mysterious "green light" that they're shining has actually turned a chimpanzee into a monkey?!?! And maybe, for an amount to be determined, they can shine their creative "green light" on your project and transform it also!

...hey, it's reaching, but I'm trying to be "creative"... ;~}

15 - It's George W Bush. He just makes us feel blue, not think blue. Be sure to follow the link...

16 - This is sad or is it just me. The chimp/ape/monkey thing was not immediately clear to me, but what struck me is the "sad" look of the chimp on the image (not really a sparkle in the eyes).

Makes you wonder about the "creative solutions" they will come up with.

- Tom -

17 - Well, I didn't know what was wrong with the picture, but there *is* something wrong with the post title. It's not Friday unless you're solely targeting your Western Pacific readers. :)

18 - @17 (Tim) What? Unless your calendar is different from mine, 18 APR 2008 IS a Friday, and that is the date I posted this originally. Am I missing something? If you look at the bottom of the post you'll see some text that says, "Posted by Rocky Oliver On 04/18/2008".

Am I missing something? Emoticon

Rock

19 - Well, aside from the whole ape/monkey thing (which was a great catch, BTW), the ad sucks. Emoticon

The chimp's unhappy, which creates negative feelings in the viewer and thus a negative product association.

The logo is waaay to small to associate the logo with the ad. If I ever encounter the logo again I won't think "Hey, I saw them before!"

Emoticon What creative needs do they meet? Perhaps the context of the ad informs us of this, but as it is now I have no idea. Suppose I'l a sculptor who specializes in large-form statuary. Will they sell me 10,000 pounds of concrete? Or do they just supply creative ideas?
