As my buddy Bob alluded to on his blog, he and I are really excited about our session this year. We've decided to team up as the Lotus Notes/Domino MYTHBUSTERS! What do we mean, you ask? Well, here's the session abstract:
If you've been working with IBM Lotus Notes/Domino for any amount of time, I'm sure you've heard many crazy anecdotes or axioms - things like "GetNthDocument is ALWAYS slower than GetNextDocument", or even "@Formulas are ALWAYS slower than LotusScript to do the same work", and so on. Well, never fear, the MYTHBUSTERS are here! Come watch Bob Balaban and Rocky Oliver bust the most popular and interesting Lotus Notes/Domino myths suggested by YOU, the Lotus community. We'll confirm some, "explode" many, and generally have a fun time while helping you become more informed and knowledgeable. This means that the next time you encounter one of these myths, you'll be able to say, "That's not true - the Mythbusters told me so!"

Bob and I have a good idea of how we're going to handle this, and make it informative and fun - but we're not going to share that, just yet.
However we really could use your help in coming up with a good set of myths, anecdotes, axioms, and "old wives' tales" you've been taught over the years. So, I'd like to ask you to respond with your favorites - or maybe some you've always heard, but aren't quite sure they're true. Bob and I will review the list, and select a few to explore. Additionally, we may ask a bit more of you for the session, if your suggestion is used (more on that later).

Can't think of any dev things but admin ideas many come to mind.
AdminP is the biggest culprit. it's supposed to do everything yet one has to force it to run sometimes or update faster/sooner.
Probably a few questions on there, from basics like why doesn't it pick up server versions all the time.
Why doesn't it or does it (I don't believe it does)delete users name from active agents, in corps that don't sign apps with a generic database ID when said user is fired?
In 801 you could chane the color of unread emails by accessing the CSS, in 802 you can't, is there a way or not?

So some functions Profile Documents are BAD.
If you are in need to put away some fast changing data (For instance a counter or so) profile documents are not good for that. As Domino Caches Profile documents bad. And I can let you show that via a application. If you have really Static Data for configuartion of a app profile documents are good. If you have fast changing data put it in a normal doc and not a profile doc.

Sounds like a fantastic session. In recent months we have busted 3 long held myths so they might be good to include:
1. Compact -C defragments a NSF, in fact it does the opposite { Link } (includes a video)
2. Compact -b consolidates freespace -> no it doesn't !

(including a poll showing 60% of people think it does)
3. And by far the biggest, is that file fragmentation does not effect Domino's performance. We feel this is a bit like believing the earth is flat.

1. To be honest ...I have never heard that myth.
Deframentation is a OS file specific issue. NTSF a well known for fragmenting heavily, but other file systems like different ones on Linux ....it is less an issue.
3. Really?
I fully understand you want to sell your defragmentation product, but seems more like you are starting myths instead .
Why not just run the excellent free open source defragmenter for windows "JKdefrag"?

Yes, there are lots of myths out there and I haven't heard them all - either.
As for your accusation that I'm start a myth to sell product, that is just unfounded and offensive. I can't count how many times we have had to explain this stuff, particularly when you add RAID and SANS.
Use whatever product you want, but why not use a Domino specific tool to help with Domino specific issues?
Either way, the key is understand the problem and doing something about it - and that is the core of the myth. Believe it or not.
