Looks like we all get a taste of "Hannover" today!

As many of you know the DNUG/IBM Lotus Notes Technical Forum in Hannover, Germany is underway this week, and today Ambuj Goyal brought a little taste of "Hannover" to all of us.

No, not Hannover the city - Hannover, the codename for the new Notes 8 client.

For more information your best location is to go to Ed's blog and read all about it. Ed is in Hannover this week, and is going to be sharing quite a bit of info regarding Hannover (product and probably city as well) over the next couple of days.

I do want to say one thing, however. I don't ever want to hear anyone in our industry say "Notes is dead" anymore, ever. The announcement of Hannover, along with the previous announcements and assurances of the future of Notes/Domino should put to rest once and for all any "sky is falling" handwringing going on in the Domino marketspace. Hell, Notes isn't dead - it is just the opposite, evolving with the market and even expanding onto new desktop OSes (Hannover will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux).

Sing it from the rooftops. Domino and Notes are alive and well, and will be around for many years to come.

**Why do they call it the Department of Interior when they are in charge of everything outdoors?

Comments

1 - My personal prediction is that the overwhelming positive feedback on the UI will tempt them to roll in what they can into R7.

...Neil

2 - Rocky- Ed mentions in the comments that "all those existing and many future applications built on the Notes architecture will be built and maintained with Domino Designer."

He also said that "Workplace Designer will be important as well."

This is great news all around and I like the look of the client!!

3 - So will we still see major UI changes in 7.5 or will they be aligned with "the next major release after 7.0"?

4 - Nice to see Lotus actually playing the MS game and announcing something a year and a half before it will supposedly ship. Hopefully they won't also fall victim to vaporware-itis like MS is so prone to do.

Anyone remember Garnet? *ducks*

And don't jump down my throat, I know it was just a feature that didn't make since with Websphere around... Geez.

5 - So it's definitely going to be called Notes 8?

6 - Workplace Designer is supposed to have a beta release in July. That was announced at the Workplace Live tour. So at least you'll be able to get your hands on it then. Not ncecessarily a release date, but it's something!

7 - You know we can't say when products will ship until they're done. :)

In the meantime, I would keep an eye on the developerWorks site for various announcements. And, I'm sure Rocky will be able to post to his blog when the time comes.

http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/workplace/client.html is the url to app dev info on IBM Workplace products.

8 - "Next major release after 7.0" -- no name decided at this time.

9 - @Neil -- no way. Notes 7 is shipping in <90 days. It's baked.

10 - Yes, the new client is Eclipse-based. It is similar to the Workplace Managed Client (WMC, formerly known as the Workplace Client Technologies), but is a distinct product.

As for what dev tools, I would say (as me, not as an IBMer) that I would learn about Rational Application Developer, and also Workplace Designer (when it ships). Anyone else is free to offer an opinion as well.

Rock

11 - @Chris - thanks for the response.

@Ben - there ya go, straight from the geek's mouth

Rock

12 - Any news on when Workplace Designer might ship?

13 - Is this next-gen client based on Eclipse? Anything about the architecture would be helpful. Steer us all in the right direction for new dev tools. We're listening.
