Have you checked out Google lately?

If you're like me you are in your browser (Firefox, in my case) constantly. And as such I try to make my browser environment as useful and full-powered as possible. I take advantage of the plethora of Firefox plugins, I tune my browser performance to be as fast as possible, and so on - you get the idea, and you probably do the same.

I also want my home page to give me a a bunch of information and useful features at my fingertips - and my search engine of choice is Google. Well, today I wanted to share one of my favorite Google features - the custom home page. Now it is quite possible that you all have discovered this, and this is a "duh!" post (feel free to rag me if this is the case) - but just in case you've been too heads-down to notice this nifty feature, I thought I'd bring it to your attention.

Google provides you the way to create an incredibly robust homepage - I have provided a (shrunken) screenshot of mine below:

Google custom front page

To create one of these you first have to have a GMail account. If you don't have one, you can sign up here. When you create a custom home page Google marks your preferences as a part of your account, so that when you go to a different computer you can sign into GMail and your custom homepage will appear there for you (nice feature when you're on the road at a conference using a kiosk).

Once you have a GMail account you can go to iGoogle, and you will be presented with a page that looks like this:

iGoogle generic front page

Then you simply click on the "make it your own" link, and you're off! That link presents you with a few choices, and you can click a link to see all of the widgets available - and there are tons.

After you pick your widgets, you can pick "themes" for your iGoogle page. The theme I am running is really neat - the sun in the graphic "moves" across the skyline during the day, and goes from morning, to day, to evening, to night. It is really a nice touch.

So, if you're still using the boring Google page, I recommend you spice up you dull browser life and check out iGoogle - you won't be disappointed.

Comments

1 - Just a clarification -- you need a Google account, not (necessarily) a GMail account.

But yes, iGoogle rocks. It has been my default page in my browsers for a couple months now.

2 - @Keith. Thank you!!!! Just added the Blog Search to my iGoogle homepage & I think I'll be turning to that as often as the nd6forum on ibm. As Timothy said - I sure hope Google doesn't turn out to be 'evil' - since I've also been putting all my eggs in the Google basket. email, calendar, photos.

3 - Mika, I get the idea... at least iGoogle does have a tabbed interface, which makes it easier to have more widgets than will fit on one page. I actually group mine to make it easier.

@Everyone - do you have a favorite iGoogle widget? Maybe one you think others haven't found? Share with the class here!

4 - Hey, Rock, is Google past their "can't get into GMail unless someone invites you" stage? Someplace I have a GMail account, but honestly, my default start page in all my browsers is a static HTML file hosted on my longtime ISP, Fred.net. All my usual links in dropdowns, stripped-down text, loads like lightning (no sunsets over Bali, sorry) and all I need to update it is telnet and pico.

5 - Part of your Google home page can be summaries of Lotus Notes/ Domino content too. Configure using Notes 7.0.2's RSS template or TitanWEB Viewsfeed (open source version available on OpenNTF), then select via URL to add to the home page.

6 - I'm using google more and more. I've switched to google Reader for checking RSS feeds and I'm keeping my bookmarks on google instead of my local PC.

I sure hope google doesn't turn out to be evil.

7 - Here's my favorite widget { Link }

It's the Google Domino Blog Search

8 - I want to uninstall igoogle!

9 - Sorry for repeating myself.

10 - Ah! You mean OpenNTF widgets, well here they are:
please replace category in the link below with 'recent', 'active', 'downloads' or 'podcasts'

11 - @7 - You don't need an invite for gmail anymore. There's a sign-up link on the homepage. { Link }

Rocky - I just came across iGoogle before reading your post about it. But I'm so addicted to Netvibes I can't bring myself to switch, much as I love all things Google.

12 - I've had the same idea, to have all the new stuff you want to check be brought to you, rather than you have to get it.

But it's kinda impossible to stuff everything on one page (and changing the page is not a good solution either), so I also had the idea to use the 3rd dimension (it's an very old concept from the IRL world), which would make navigation much more natural and logical.

Linux has Beryl, Windows has Vista, but both are not really doing their job, they are more or less just toys and eye candy. So what I want to do is a not-a-toy 3D desktop and workspace. But more about that soon...

13 - I too am becoming more tied to Google. Google Reader was my latest switch. Once I figure out a decent financial gadget for iGoogle, I'll probably ditch MyYahoo as my homepage.

14 - @7 - You don't need an invite for gmail anymore. There's a sign-up link on the homepage. { Link }
