Our friend Libby Ingrassia Schwarz , aka NotesGirl, has had a bit of a rough time lately. One of the lesser known things that Libby is known for is the ability to come up with Lotus and Domino related haikus at the drop of a hat. In fact, when I would be down, or bored, or whatever I could simply ping Libby and tell her I needed a Lotus Haiku, and she would cheerfully respond a few minutes later, and it would inevitably cheer me up. For instance, here's a Libby original:

On an upgrade day
Feeling like a treadmill rat
What version is this?

Or how about:

Cerificates are
expiring in users
I hide at the beach

So, now that Libby needs to cheering up, I thought we could help her as she has helped me and others in the past. This is your time to show off your geek creativity and produce a work of literary art: a Lotus Haiku. Welcome to the First Annual Libby Ingrassia Lotus Haiku Contest. In case you're a bit rusty on what a haiku really is, let me remind you:

"Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables."
--from Haiku for People

So, put on your creativity beanies and show off you geek creativity! First prize? The love and admiration of your friends, and especially Libby.

Have fun!

We love you Libby!

21 - Ahh, memories. Here are a pair of Haiku that I wrote for Libby back in July 1999, when we worked together at Interliant. Thank god for local mail file replicas.

The waves hit the beach,
Like users hit my server --
Endlessly pounding.

A panic error.
Now your web server is down,
But where is Quincy?

Here's one she sent back to me, entitled "Administrator's Plea":

Domino users
In agony. No email.
Please do not call me.

22 - Wow! If only we wrote our blogs and code so concisely! :)

Notes is more than mail
Applications like water
Give the network life

Hide when: you feel blue

Just a class or job.

33 - LOL Andy - those were hilarious!

Thanks for the turnout, everyone. I know Libs appreciates it!

Rock

34 - @Marco - good luck with that; but I fear you've traded one set of headaches (i.e. the UI - and it sounds like half your problems are in the app designs instead of Notes itself) for another set of problems (e.g. single object store - wait till you get corruption in your volume and ALL MAIL is screwed up, the virus du-jour, and let's not forget that when the new Exchange comes out you'll get to jump on the rip-n-replace bandwagon, oh and so much more!).

BTW, this blog is 100% domino - and is indexed by Google daily (ALL of it).

So, how about coming back, say, this time next year and tell me what you think?

Just to get you all excited, here's a preview of what you'll get to experience over the next year!

http://www.outlookpower.com/issues/issue200410/00001297001.html

And since we all love sequels, here ya go:

http://www.outlookpower.com/issues/issue200410/00001343001.html

Oh, and keep in mind that Outlook/Exchange is mail; Notes/Domino does mail, and so much more.

36 - Collaboration
That word fills my haiku room
Oh my, out of space

CULT shirt ideas form
Pressure is starting to build
What will the geeks wear?

Langinrichs is long
Can anyone pronounce it?
Just call him Big Ben

Lotusphere is near
Sushi, Beer, and theme parks call
Who goes to sessions?

Rock

37 - OK, my first attempt:

Workplace is coming
Domino Geeks fret for naught
Get over it, geeks!

Rock

38 - My server is down,
Lotuspehere is coming soon
I like to eat cheese.

or

Blogging can be fun
Writing things can be a chore
Still thinkin about cheese

39 - When the agent run awry
It is hard for me,not to Cry
For the message that was sent
Was not intended to say "Good Bye!!'

40 - The storm of change blows
But these two things never crash:
Notes' views and my love.

41 - I still use vi
to develop my website
what is domino ?

42 - One two three four five,
"R" was good enough back then,
Six is "ND". Why?

Sametime now renamed
IMB Lotus Workplace
Don't remember rest

What is "El Wwiccum"?
Strange name for business software

43 -
If mood = sad print PoemsFromRock Else poem = new Rythm

44 - Here: Some sad attempts. So far I like Ben's "Relational?".

Rocky wants Haiku
All of us count syllables
Higher art form lost

Libby feeling down
With Lotusphere approaching
Say it is not so

e-Pro now online
But still worth every penny
Oh relax, I kid

45 - NSD kicks in
Follow stacktrace to the end
Bug is in NT

Yellow lightning bolt
Flashing, flashing, flashing, oops!
NSD appears

There once was a coder named Ray,
Who in school with PLATO did play,
But lo! He did dote
"How could this work remote?"
Replication was born on that day

46 - and here we go...

Lotus Notes Servers
Archival vendors can't treat
ZipLip's got them beat

Red box of death appeared
Delete cache.dsk

48 - 'dash of LotusScript
a jigger of formula
Notes app. is done, yeah!

49 - it replicated?
I can't see the document!

50 - Gerstner bought Lotus
Merger was tougher than hoped
Now they love yellow

OK, I'm on a roll...

Rock

51 - Yes, I am 5 months late.

No, I won't be at Lotusphere. But, please have one for me.

And now, my contributions:

Notes is not Outlook
One does more than the other
Sending viruses

User is crying
Select - delete - F9 - Yes
Think before you act

Yes Notes is quirky
But its not from Microsoft
And so to be loved

Computer-related, but not Notes, per se:

Black screen. Cursor mocks
Your solution will be found
With pen and paper

52 - Red Box comes again!
Why does Notes hate me so?
Wait - damn SP2!

Rock

53 - Radicati Wrote
Thinking We Could, Would Not Read
Libby Set Them Straight

54 - Here's another one:

The silly things done
For a simple little beer
Who shall claim the prize?

55 - I want to try too!

I managed to learn all those names
Then they suddenly changed,
I'm amazed who am I

57 - My company is retiring Notes at long last. Here's the (admittedly non-haiku) poem I wrote about it:

Morning comes, I check my mail
And once again, I'm mired.
Notes is running slow again --
But wait -- what's that: retired?

No more alphabetic calls
To random databases,
Like AKL_MAIL in New Zealand
And other silly places.

No more random document names
That really toasts my noodle --
Instead we can use web pages
And search them all with Google*!

No more endless lightning bolts
As server hits drag on
My Outlook's fresh and new this day
And Lotus Notes is gone!

58 - I have Lotus Notes
I also have a printer
Never shall they meet

Lotus and Iris
Digital flowers offering
Groupware fragrances

Rock

59 -
set db =

'I type this each day

60 - The Instructor Guide
A Syllabus of Mistakes
CLI's must fix

61 - Time to chime in... since Libby is my editor for my writings with e-ProWire...

I write for Libby
The deadlines never ending
My words are for her

62 - 6 point 5 point 2
upgrading and migrating
we already done

6 point 5 point 3
it will arrive september
we upgrade, will you?

63 - very good site

64 - Rocky has a blog
Where he called us to Haiku
I think Libby smiles

65 - Sameplace, Quicktime, WRONG!
Maybe our names were too long.
We will rename them.

No new messages.
Damn that little blue arrow!
Just give me my mail!!

I love it, it's the Haiku Blog Movement of 2004... Cheers, Libby!

66 - Libby's mom is kewl
She stops by to watch the geeks
She sees we love Libs

Thanks for stopping by, Libby's mom

Rock

67 - Lotus petals drop
Timely user happiness
Just one more fix

68 - If only I could
Remember the things I should
life dot en ess eff ?

69 - Yeah, Chris, you rock -- those are great haiku, as well as a nice lens into the past.

Well, I guess I have avoided putting pen to paper long enough today...

A garnet shimmers
While an Rnext raven flies
What an odyssey

Redmond weeps softly
What happened to Kodiak?
Roadmap to nowhere

Writing, editing
Informing the Pro readers
Libby is the best

70 - Why do you repost?
Can't we all just get along?
Please search the forum.

When your views all break
You must ctrl shift f9
To make them better again.

Where is all my mail?
The administrator lies!
Whoops, me no replicatey.

Libby... when you are feeling blue, remember, you managed to get 24 (at the moment) people to sit down and tap out syllables on their fingers as they write.
(don't even tell me you didn't all do it.)

Is 'whoops' one syllable or two? Don't laugh. This is what comes about from taking 10 minutes to count syllables.

My vote so far is Wolfgang's. Too great!!
