Announcing Show n Tell Thursdays

I was having a discussion with Bruce over the weekend - and we both agreed that we, as a community, seemed to have "lost our way" a bit with all the defensive arguing lately. We feel it is time to get back on track - sharing, collaborating, and discussing the kickass apps and techniques we're developing every day. So without further ado, Bruce and I want to announce a new "tradition" we hope to start:
Show n Tell Thursdays (BTW, thanks to Bob Balaban for coming up with the name ;) )
Show n Tell Thursdays are going to be every Thursday - and on this day we are all going to share some app or some technique that we've developed. And I want everyone to participate - even if you don't normally do "geek" type posts. This also includes Admins - you admin weenies have some great techniques, tips, tricks, or apps you use to do your job better, and we could all learn from you. So, every Thursday we'll all have something to look forward to - reading about a plethora of new apps and techniques that our fellow Lotus Geeks have developed. And from this we increase the communal knowledge pool of which we all drink, and we'll all be better for it.
So today is your heads-up. The first Show n Tell Thursday is this Thursday. You have a couple of days to get a post together. I'll be posting, as will Bruce and many others - and we want you to contribute too. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
A few other things...
First, we want you to participate even if you're NOT a blogger. Simply prepare your entry and send it to one of the participating bloggers - we'll post it for you and give you proper attribution.
Second, we need a kewl graphic for this - and Scott Good has come to the rescue! Here's the graphic for our blogs:
Third, we need a Technorati category - I have no idea how to do that, but Paul Mooney said Greyhawk may know about that - someone get that going for us.
Fourth, I have a suggestion - if you're going to post code, I recommend you use Joe Litton's LotusScript to HTML Conversion page. Use inline-style, and you can copy/paste that into your entry.
Get those thinking caps on, and I'll see you Thursday!
Updates:
Here's an updated graphic with a bow-tie (from Newbs) - for those of you who are so inclined... ;)
Paul Mooney has blogged about Show-n-Tell Thursday as well. Check it out here.
Wild Bill Buchan has blogged about it too, here.
Add Greyhawk to the list of folks blogging about Show-n-Tell Thursday. His entry is here.
And Keith Nolen (Yellerdog.net) gives a hint about his upcoming post here.
Rock
**Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.

Speaking of the Technorati tag, I think I like "Show-n-Tell Thursday". Anyone agree?

Yes, Blogsphere already has the category specific RSS feeds. You can also turn on an option in your Blog Config to display little RSS icons that link directly to the feed in the categories block.
Hey, Just had a new idea. If you display the category on the blog pagethen maybe an rss feed icon beside that also would be nice... That will be in the next version of Blogsphere I think.
I've also added a new 'Technorati Tags' option to the story form in the next version of Blogsphere that will create the tags as detailed in Joe's blog.
Now I just need to tidy up a few niggly little bugs and get it released.

John and I tested it, and it works great.
Kewl, huh?

1. I'm working on adapting my bloggregator code for John. So, it will be similar to, but better than the consolidated Lotusphere blogger feed that I've put up the past few years.
2. I actually agree with Chris about the logo. I think it's too far "out there" and using it will distract from what we're trying to accomplish. Although maybe if you made the cape yellow, I might be able to get past my objections

So I still like the idea of the aggregator. Or, at least, a central blog we can cross-post to, linking back to our own blogs. Manual approaches are simplest, sometimes. Unless Rich Schwartz wants to donate and tweak his Lotusphere aggregation code?

Show and tell requires you to know the tag to search it...

Oh, and please tell me this duel will not involve weenies at 20 paces.........

Hey, any reason this needs to be Notes/Domino related? I've been living in VoIP land recently and that is some amazing stuff these days. It only SOUNDS boring.
Here's a hint: "Vonage is way way way too expensive."

Actually, even though tagging might not be 100% wonderous, I do think that it is a pretty kewl way to do things, and technorati, for all it's blemishes, works pretty well.
I subscribe to a bunch of custom RSS feeds from their based on various tags and they've worked pretty well for me.
I'm just hip on this whole tagging thing...

Seriously, I see a major benefit in having things centrally aggregated. But I also WANT the people coming up with the tips to post them on their OWN blogs, because that may help spread out the community and get us all reading and thinking about new things.
Maybe we could put a no-comments post on a central blog, and the real post, with discussion, on our own blogs?
Not all of these items will be actual code, especially as we're including those crazy admins, so we can't just put them in the Code Bin on OpenNTF. But a group blog hosted on OpenNTF, maybe?

Me, too.
There. Good enough? *chuckle*

"Show-n-Tell Thursday" would work. I do suggest keeping it singular to match the graphic.
Graphic: Gosh, I LOVE the graphic. And I love diversity. So I see no harm in Chris coming up with the kid-safe version, and I'll use the original - only because there's not one that's worse yet
Aggregation: John Head was, I believe, working on an aggregation site. I like Rob's idea of posting on our own sites ...AND having the posts aggregated in a single place for easy access.

Re. Technorati:
1. I've posted a quick little primer to help folks incorporate Technorati into their blog. Post is at http://joelitton.net/A559B2/home.nsf/plinks/JLIN-6LXQXD
2. As far as how to create a Technorati category or tag, it's really just a matter of us deciding what tag to use, and then following the simple procedure to tag one's posts.
So, we just need to settle on a name for the Technorati tag and use it. There is no registration of a tag name at Technorati.
How about "ShowNTellThursday"? Other suggestions?
Personally, I would also assign other tags for Technorati indexing, and these additional tags would vary depending on the nature of the tip. Most likely I would include "Domino", "LotusScript", "Java", "Lotus" as possible additional tags.

My vision for the aggregator is to only have it as a read-only, single point for reading. It would link back to the individual blog entry on the person's site for comments. While having a single point to read all of this is great, we also want to let each person build their own space and name.
I was going to let people post stuff this thursday and then see how the data looks. We have to deal with multiple blog software (dominoblog, blogsphere, and people on public sites ... along with folks like Pollack and Ben that have custom blog software). And we have to deal with just getting certain posts. This is not as straightforward to what Rich did for Lotusphere (not downplaying his stuff at all).
The Technorati tag - do we not want to have some way to identify this as something going along with IBM/Lotus tech? Otherwise searching or browsing thru the tags will not help folks.

Everyone participating creates an RSS feed with just the category of posts for Show and Tell Thursday. In Dominoblog, you can make a RSS feed out of any category (its in the Content Category config document).
This way, we do not have to do anything funky. I will create a way to submit your Show and Tell Thursday rss feed to the tool.
We are going to put the feed somewhere that can handle it. I figure we will get a huge number of hits to it.

Fud is part of the internet.
Sometimes it is not even malintended. Just people loosening nerves after toppling into problems trying out a new shiny tool they've heard about.
Even Ruby on Rails (which is very new now) has fud now.
Fud against fud has become more of a sign that a platform has left alpha stadium.
I am going to post link in german forum.

Anyway, Nice to hear you are adding that Declan...was meaning to get around to it myself, but just haven't had time. For anyone that needs it, you can add it manually this way too. Here is the tag:
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/Show-n-tell+thursday" rel="tag">
Show-n-tell thursday
</a>

Saw Rock's presentation at LotusSphere 06 and decided to check out the site. Read the Show&Tell thingy and think that is very Kuel.
With that said, I am not a Blogger and have never have so much as posted anything, anywhere except at the LotusGoldForum ( God I hate showing my ignorance like this ). So, like, HOW do I, exactly, send something to "one of the participating bloggers"?
And/or I can just absorb everything all ya'll post without active involvement. But, Rock, you DID say "First, we want ... "
StayWell,
Donovan
